Closed Cemeteries

There are three closed cemeteries in Central Hawke's Bay:

Kaikora North Cemetery, Ōtāne

Kaikora North Cemetery in Ōtāne sits adjacent to the Wellington-Napier railway line, opposite the intersection of Carruthers Street and Knorpe Street. The last burial there took place in 1903, after which it was closed due to the danger posed by the deteriorated headstones and surroundings. Many of the wooden headstones there were destroyed by grass fires caused by sparks from the passing steam trains, but those that were able to be salvaged are now at the Ōtāne Cemetery on State Highway 2. Recently, a memorial has been erected on the Kaikora North Cemetery site, with a board listing the known burials there.

Hampden Bush Cemetery, Tikokino

Hampden Bush Cemetery in Tikokino sits on Holden Road, past the Lyall Street intersection. The last burial took place at this cemetery in 1934, and in 1964 a memorial was erected listing all those buried here.

St Peter's Church Cemetery, Waipawa

Situated in Church Street in Waipawa, St Peter's Church Cemetery once belonged to its namesake church and was given to Council to look after. The last burial took place here in 1974. All the broken headstones have been removed and replaced with a memorial that lists the names of those buried there. Not all headstones were removed and some family graves remain undisturbed. This lovely cemetery has a park-like atmosphere with a large protected oak tree growing inside the gateway.
