Central Hawke’s Bay District Council activate EOC in response to weather event

Flooding at Tikokino.jpg

In response to the significant heavy rainfall across the district, the Central Hawke’s Bay District Council has activated the Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) this morning.

Numerous roads are closed across the District and a large number of roads are services are impacted by the flooding. Motorists are being advised to avoid travel where possible and stay away from flooded areas. Level Four Water restrictions across the District are in place, with water supplies across the district being impacted from river water quality.

While rain has slightly eased in the district this morning, river levels continue to rise and with further heavy rain forecast into the evening and tomorrow morning, EOC Controller Josh Lloyd says Council has activated emergency plans and is working alongside emergency services and other networks within the community to assess risks, provide advice and respond to the weather event.

“Council staff are working continuously to support our local community. We currently have staff shortages due to the impact of COVID-19 and made the decision to close the Waipawa Library this morning so we have Council staff available on the ground to support the response to the event”.

Central Hawkes Bay District Council would like to thank the local community for reporting issues and providing accurate and details, which has positively assisted with our response and also for undertaking active steps to minimise the impact to our networks and services including wastewater.

Roading crews are continuing to check roads across the district, with flood water levels hampering the inspection of many areas.

Residents are encouraged proactively report issues to Council 24/7 on 06 857 8060.
