Steam in the Bay - February 2025

For the first time in 10 years, Steam returns to Napier's Art Deco Festival!
For the first time since 2015, a steam train returns to the Art Deco Festival! Working alongside the festival organisers, as well as a special collaboration with the Central Hawkes Bay Cancer Society - we are pleased to be bringing you 'Steam in the Bay' between the 14 - 16th February 2025. There's plenty of opportunities to jump onboard, tell all of your friends and pick a trip or two…or three?

With over 60 New Zealand-made craft, produce and artisan stalls, multiple food trucks and bougie picnic tables and cheese boards. Waipukurau will be transformed back to the Art Deco era with live music, classic cars and entertainment.
Upon arrival at Woodville, the entire train will be turned on the famous balloon loop for the return journey.

The Opapa Steam Express – 16th February

After venturing away from following SH2, we navigate sweeping curves and nice straight stretches of track, where you’ll hear the chuff of the steam engine, and the clickity clack of the tracks beneath! We’ll pause briefly at the beautifully restored Opapa Station building as our drivers change ends to our heritage diesel locomotive to haul us back to Hastings. An easy & relaxing day out for the Hastings community!

Just a sub-10min walk from where the train stops, enjoy a freshly prepared meal by the fantastic local community.
