EIT Public Lecture: Assoc Prof Pii-Tuulia Nikula

Turning Up the Heat: Businesses and Climate Change

In this Reconnecting through Research session Pii-Tuulia shares her journey exploring the intricate relationship between climate change and business. She poses the question: Are businesses exacerbating the climate crisis, or are they helping to solve it by taking ambitious action? Pii-Tuulia discusses key global, national and local trends, as well as the drivers of and barriers to climate action. The discussion further extends to the current business landscape of climate disclosures and science-based decarbonisation targets. Pii-Tuulia critically explores symbolic and substantive modes of climate engagement, and delves into the various practices that business can employ to mitigate their climate impact, both within and beyond their organisational boundaries. This session aims to stimulate thought-provoking discussions on how businesses can both spearhead and impede significant climate action.

Dr Pii-Tuulia Nikula is an Associate Professor at the EIT School of Business, where she lectures on Sustainable Organisations and Research Methods. Most of Pii-Tuulia’s current research explores organisational climate mitigation strategies, decarbonisation trajectories, and climate targets. She has published a number of journal articles and co-edited two books. Pii-Tuulia is also a Co-Founder of an award-winning global climate action non-profit.
