Hazardous and E-WastePara mōrearea / Te para tāhiko

Hazardous waste is any substance that can harm the environment and affect the health of people and animals. Hazardous waste is harmful because it is:

  • explosive, flammable, reactive, toxic, corrosive or infectious.
  • produced by factories, users of toxic products (such as people who use cleaning products and chemicals) and even households.

Potentially hazardous waste makes up around 1% of household rubbish bags and transfer station waste. Even though this is only a tiny amount, it can still cause big problems.

Council provides a FREE hazardous waste collection service once a year. Our free hazardous waste collection - our HazMobile - provides residents the opportunity to dispose of household and garden chemicals, used batteries, old gas bottles and other hazardous items safely without having to pay for disposal.

Our next hazardous waste collection will be in 2025. Check back here for details.

Battery Recycling

Ever wondered what to do with your used batteries? Don't put them in the rubbish!

Batteries can leak toxic chemicals and can also cause fires at our transfer stations and landfill. Instead, dispose of your used batteries in one of our FREE battery recycling bins.

We have partnered with UpCycle to provide you with battery buckets, which when full are sent to UpCycle in Auckland where the team will recover valuable materials from the batteries.

You can use one of our FREE battery recycling bins at these locations:

  • Waipukurau Transfer Station
  • Waipawa Transfer Station
  • Pōrangahau Transfer Station
  • Takapau Transfer Station
  • Waipawa Library
  • Sustainable Ewe - Waipukurau
