Minor Repairs

As part of our Cyclone Recovery Response efforts, we identified and programmed around 4,000 minor roading repairs for completion during 2023, funded by NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi.

Immediately following Cyclone Gabrielle, we engaged five contractors to complete the vast amount of minor repairs and restore accessibility to as many compromised sites as possible with the available budget. We created 'work zones', as illustrated in the map below, and divided the recovery work between five contractors so that repairs could be completed efficiently and effectively within the same geographic area.

By the end of 2023, we had complete more than 4,000 minor repairs across the district.

Minor roading repairs included those sites requiring low-risk, low-value work costing less than $10,000 to fix. The repairs varied in scale and severity but did not require complex planning, investigation or design work, and could be repaired using standard design options, with work taking anywhere between several hours to five days to complete.

The programmed minor works included pavement repairs, culvert cleaning and reinstatement of roadside water tables. We also completed a large amount of rock armouring to reinforce compromised bridges across the district and minimise the risk of further scouring and erosion around bridge abutments and piles - future-proofing these essential connections for future weather events and helping ensure our communities remain connected.
