Minor Protection & Drainage Works

We have completed minor protection and drainage works on 98 currently unfunded cyclone-damaged sites across the district thanks to funding from NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi.

Thanks to an additional $9.5 million in recovery funding from the NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi Emergency Response Fund, we have completed minor protection and drainage works on 98 currently unfunded cyclone-damaged sites across the district.

The type of work completed as part of this programme includes:

  • clearing culverts and drainage channels.
  • hydroseeding sites to promote vegetation growth.
  • constructing bunds around the top of landslides.
  • replacing cones with more permanent sight rails or hit sticks for improved visibility.
  • upgrading temporary traffic management with sturdier options.

The work aims to reduce temporary traffic management costs and ensure sites are safe and remain accessible throughout the winter months.

The cyclone caused landslides and damage to the road's surface, signage and protection rails, drainage and stormwater assets. The dead-end route provides access to several farming properties and forestry blocks, so the funded protection work included replacing/clearing culverts, pavement repairs, new signage and protection barriers, hydroseeding, and removing slip material.

A culvert suffered significant erosion damage, de-stabilising the structure and the road edge. The funded protection work included drainage improvements, repairing the retaining wall, and reinstating the protection fence at the site. Crews also completed earthworks to correct the water channel and shoulder reinstatement.

The cyclone caused erosion damage to the culvert, de-stabilising the concrete bag headwall and the road edge. Protection works at the site included drainage improvements, culvert clearing and extension, rebuilding the cement bag headwall and stabilising the road edge. Crews also reinstated the sight rail, and hydroseeded the area.

The culvert was badly eroded when the cyclone de-stabilised the concrete bag headwall and the road edge. Protection work on the affected culvert included clearing the site, extending the double culvert, rebuilding the cement bag headwall and stabilising the road edge. The team also reinstated the sight rail and hydroseed the area.
