Training your Dog

A dog is a treasured part of any family but it is important that owners train and teach their furry friends how to behave in a way that is not a nuisance but safe and healthy for everyone.

You can train you dog not to bark using positive affirming behaviour techniques. As long as you respond the same way every time your dog does something wrong, your dog will soon understand.

Dog treatsTrain your dog not to bark

Encourage your dog to bark only to alert you, then to stop barking straight afterwards. Praise your dog and reward them with a treat when they stop barking.

Use short reprimand words if your dog barks at everything that moves. Praise your dog as soon as it stops barking and reward them with a treat when they stop barking.

Do not console a barking dog as the attention will reward and reinforce the barking.

Minimise sight stimulus

Do not leave your dog home alone where it can see the footpath or people passing by. Instead, confine your dog to the backyard or in a way that it is unable to see things to bark at. Use shade cloth or brush stick fencing to block off any sight stimulus.

Keep your dog occupied

Provide other entertainment by rotating and restricting dog toys to occupy your dog. Giving your dog something to do prevents boredom and barking at everything it sees.

Exercise your dog regularly.

Place treats in different places around your property so that your dog can sniff them out, or use a treat ball to encourage your dog to work for their treat.

Arrange playdates with other dogs. This will help your dog learn the difference between safe and threatening situations (when barking is helpful).

Ask a friend or a dog sitter to look after your dog.
