Simple roading repairs comprise medium-sized structural projects that demand minimal engineering design and construction work that does not exceed a cost of $200,000 per site.
Simple roading repairs comprise medium-sized structural projects that demand minimal engineering design and construction work that does not exceed a cost of $200,000 per site. The sites are low risk to repair and can include installing small or simple retaining walls, culvert replacement and landslides. Simple repair work does not require resource consent to complete and necessitate limited geotechnical input.
Council has identified 11 sites on the district's roading network requiring simple repairs as a result of Cyclone Gabrielle, with all sites eligible for and having been awarded funding. You can read details of each simple repair programmed under Council's Road to Recovery below.
Crews are working on a landslide to the side of the road, constructing a 2 metre (high) by 76 metre (long) retaining wall and clearing the opposing draining channel. An earth bund will also be installed to prevent water flow over the face of the slope.
A broken culvert during Cyclone Gabrielle triggered a landslide at this site on Tourere Road, which was then further exacerbated by overland flow from the other side of the road. Contractors have completed repairs reinstating the broken stormwater outlet (culvert) and filling in the slope where it had slipped away, using rock armouring to compact hardfill the drainage channel beneath the culvert.
Contractors are making repairs to the loss of carriageway due to an under slip by constructing an MSE wall and installing an earth bund to prevent water flow over the face of the slip. They will also be clearing the existing culvert at this site.
Crews are addressing this moderate-sized landslide (washed out due to poor drainage) by constructing an approx. 40-metre-long MSE Wall with Terramesh face across the gabion rock face. An earth bund will also be installed to capture surface water to a new sump.
Contractors are constructing an approx. 18-metre-long MSE Wall with Terramesh face to repair this under slip. A MacMat will also be installed at the base of the wall to prevent erosion.
Crews are working on a large undercut extending to the carriageway, constructing a 45-metre-long MSE Wall with Terramesh face across gabion rock face.
Poor drainage triggered slope instability during Cyclone Gabrielle at this site on Old Hill Road, resulting in culvert discharge to the base of the slope, softening ground and the removal of one road lane. Contractors have repaired the landslide by installing an approx. 8.5-metre-long MSE Wall and cleared the adjacent culvert as well as made improvements to the outlet.
The landslide on Wakarara Road was the first of the programmed simple works to be completed in early 2024. Contractor Tough Terrain constructed a 20-metre-long MSE retaining wall with Terramesh face across gabion rock to remedy the slip, completing the work on time and attracting commendations from Council employees and the public for their professionalism and pace throughout the repair.
At this cyclone-damaged site on School Road, the road edge had slipped into the bank below, reducing the roading corridor to a single lane and a 30 km/h speed restriction. Contractors have successfully repaired the landslide by constructing an approx. 16-metre-long MSE Wall with Terramesh face across gabion rock face and installing an earth bund to capture surface water to a new sump.
Construction work has wrapped up at this significant landslide site on Te Apiti Road. Tūpore Infrastructure has repaired the cyclone-inflicted landslide with an MSE retaining wall and made improvements to the culvert that will protect the site against future erosion.
Contractors are repairing this under slip with an approx. eight-metre-long MSE Wall. The existing adjacent culvert will also be cleared and improvements to the outlet made if necessary.
Damage from Cyclone Gabrielle left the road at this site cracked on the downhill landslide sub-parallel to the road, running along the natural drainage area. Contractors have successfully repaired the slip by constructing an approx. six-metre-long MSE Wall with Terramesh face across gabion rock and replaced of the existing culvert.
Cyclone Gabrielle caused and under slip on Kahuranaki Road, which contractors have successfully repaired with a 15 metre x 1.8 metre-high MSE retaining wall and reinstated the road above.
