Minor Protection & Drainage Works

Council has secured external funding to carry out minor protection and drainage works on 98 currently unfunded cyclone-damaged sites across the district.

Minor Protection WorksThanks to an additional $9.5 million in recovery funding from the New Zealand Transport Agency Waka Kotahi Emergency Response Fund, we can carry out minor protection and drainage works on 98 currently unfunded cyclone-damaged sites across the district.

The type of work that will be completed as part of this programme includes:

  • clearing culverts and drainage channels.
  • hydroseeding sites to promote vegetation growth.
  • constructing bunds around the top of landslides.
  • replacing cones with more permanent sight rails or hit sticks for improved visibility.
  • upgrading temporary traffic management with sturdier options.

By completing this work, we aim to reduce temporary traffic management costs and ensure sites are safe and remain accessible throughout the winter months.

Mill Road

Mill Road sustained significant damage as a result of Cyclone Gabrielle Mill Road through a series of under slips and over slips as well as damage to the road's surface, signage and protection rails, drainage and stormwater assets.

Mill Road is a secondary collector road providing access to the west of Ashley Clinton and while it is a dead-end, this route provides access to several farming properties, forestry blocks and the Department of Conservation Ruahine Forest Park. The funded protection work to be completed along this road includes replacing and/or clearing culverts and wingwalls; road dig outs and pavement repairs; installing applicable road signage, sight rails and edge protection barriers; batter stabilisation (hydroseeding); and the removal of slip material from swales and scour protection works.

Bush Road2Cyclone Gabrielle caused significant erosion damage to culvert 267 on Bush Road, de-stabilising the inlet and outlet structure and the road edge. Contractor Fulton Hogan will carry out drainage improvement work to the culvert, repairing the retaining wall, installing pipe extension and a new wingwall, and reinstating the protection fence at the site. They will also complete earthworks to correct the water channel and shoulder reinstatement and if required, they will chip seal the road shoulder.

The drainage improvement work is expected to take three weeks to complete and aims to protect the site from further erosion and damage in future weather events.

Middleton27Culvert 27 on Middleton Road suffered erosion damage as a result of Cyclone Gabrielle in February 2023, the flooding event de-stabilising the concrete bag headwall and the road edge. Contractor Fulton Hogan will complete drainage improvement work to the culvert, clearing the site, extending the triple culvert, rebuilding the cement bag headwall and stabilising the road edge. The team will also reinstate the sight rail, and topsoil and hydroseed the area.

The drainage improvement work is expected to take three weeks to complete and aims to protect the site from future erosion and damage that could result from future weather events.
