From July 2022, Central Hawke’s Bay District Council will be upgrading the water main that runs along Pōrangahau Road between Lake View Road and Gaisford Terrace.
We identified Pōrangahau Road's Water Supply as a critical asset for our community and so have upgraded the water main to address known challenges related to the network's reliability and resilience, as well as improve its performance for our community.
The upgrade also aims to future proof this key infrastructure and ensure it can support the rapid population growth we are seeing in Waipukurau.
As the upgrade nears completion, 95% of project works have finished and the final piece of the puzzle is hoped to be completed in the next few months, by mid 2024. All new water mains and service laterals have been installed, and the temporary surface has been applied within the roading corridor until the contractor can return to complete final rehabilitation works in more settled weather.
The Project Team is working with the 3 Waters Team to programme the final component of this infrastructure upgrade, which will allow for installation of the last detail at the Gaisford Terrace intersection.
The Fulton Hogan team have delivered this project as contractors to council.
The team began working on site in July 2022 and expect to complete the upgrade by late 2023.

The team began working on site in July 2022 and continues to work with stakeholders to complete the project.
We expect the new road to be opened in 2023.
This date allows a large contingency for weather delays, due to the nature of the work and the project being completed during the winter months. This may see the project completed sooner should we have favourable conditions.
Yes, contractors will continue to ensure all areas are left safe and tidy. All work should be within the fenced areas.
Generally, no. The majority of the work will be completed alongside the single lane access; however, there may be some increased heavy equipment movement during the works.
There will be some noise due to moving vehicles and equipment operation. The impact of noise on the community will be kept to a minimum and within business hours.
The contractors are permitted to work on-site from 7.00 am to 6.00 pm, Monday to Saturday.
No work other than emergency or maintenance work will be undertaken on Sundays and Public Holidays without prior approval by Council.
