Francis Drake Street Water Renewal Programme

We’ve started putting a new water main into Waipukurau's Francis Drake Street, adding another chapter into #TheBigWaterStory.

We’ve started putting a new water main pipe into Waipukurau's Francis Drake Street as part of our #thebigwaterstory.

This project involves installing 470 metres of polyethylene (PE) pipe, 445 metres of water rider main and 40 lateral connections (with Acuflo manifolds on each lateral) to the water pipe network.

Currently the water pipe network servicing Francis Drake Street requires regular flushing (three times each week) and maintenance work, costing the council about $14,500 each year.

This is all being done to:

  • reduce maintenance and operational costs,
  • increase the pipe network's resilience,
  • improve the drinking water quality, and
  • increase the number of people we can deliver water to as the district grows.

This project is being delivered by the local Higgins team. It started in October 2024 and is expected to finish in January 2025.

The team began working on-site in October 2024 and is scheduled to finish the renewal work in January 2025, weather permitting.

The contractors are permitted to work on-site from 7.00 am to 6.00 pm, Monday to Saturday.

No work other than emergency or maintenance work will be undertaken on Sundays and Public Holidays without prior approval by Council.

Francis Drake Street will be accessible by residents only while work is taking place. We expect the street to be reopened to general traffic by the end of January 2025.

Yes. Our contractors will continue to ensure all areas are left safe and tidy. All work will be within the fenced areas.

There will be some noise due to moving vehicles and equipment operation. The impact of noise on the community will be kept to a minimum and within business hours only.

The water supply will only be shut off while contractors install the final detail. The project team will work with the impacted residents and give at least 72 hours' notice before water is shut off. At all other times, residents will have water supply as normal.

You can contact Council project manager Heather Flanagan on 06 857 8060 or via email to heather.flanagan@chbdc.govt.nz if you have any queries about the work or renewal programme.
