If you're feeling adventurous, take a stroll along the beach at low tide and discover Waterfall Bay.
As you enter the settlement, you'll be greeted by a tranquil lagoon nestled beneath towering cliffs, setting the scene for a beach day like no other. Enjoy breathtaking views of the Hinemahanga Rocks offshore and the sweeping, uninterrupted coastline.
Kairakau’s popular camping ground and abundant parking make it ideal for both day trips and longer stays. Whether you're swimming, surfcasting, diving, or simply basking in the sunshine, Kairakau Beach has something special for everyone.
Directions: 30 minutes drive from Waipawa. Head east from Waipawa on Tamumu Road, which becomes Pourerere Road after 2 km. Turn left onto River Road, then right onto Elsthorpe Road. At the fork in Elsthorpe village, take the right fork and follow the signs to Kairakau Beach.
Facilities: Toilets, changing facilities, picnic area, playground, camping, car parking.
Activities: Swimming, surfing, snorkelling, canoeing/kayaking, dog walking, fishing, boating, walking.
Welcome to Kairakau Campground, located at 3/4 Kairakau Beach Road. Enjoy 26 powered sites with access to a communal kitchen, hall, and clean bathroom facilities. Perfect for a comfortable stay by the beach, managed by the friendly Kairakau Development Society.
For fully self-contained travellers, a designated freedom camping area is available at the end of Kairakau Beach Road (past the public toilets). There is space for up to 23 fully certified self-contained caravans/motor homes. Stay up to three consecutive nights and enjoy the serene beachfront setting.
Camping on other Council land is not permitted. Thank you for helping preserve this beautiful spot!
