Central Hawke’s Bay enjoy the festive season at the 2020 Community Christmas Celebration

December 21, 2020: On Friday December 18, the Central Hawke’s Bay District Council were thrilled to host the 2020 Central Hawke's Bay Community Christmas Celebration’s along Ruataniwha and Northumberland Streets in Waipukurau.  

Hundreds turned out to celebrate the festive season and support our Central Hawke’s Bay businesses by completing their Christmas shopping locally.  

Businesses were pleased with the extra night of activity prior to Christmas, and guests were equally thrilled by the various special offers, discounts and free gift-wrapping services provided by local real estate agents Tremains and Black and White Real Estate. 

Young attendees were kept busy with an array of activities on offer including mini hot rods, bouncy castle, merry go-round, mini putt and vintage firetruck rides.  

“What incredible fun we had! And it was amazing to see so much support for a local businesses with so many people doing their Christmas shopping. Thanks to everyone who came to share in the magic” Says Alex Walker, Mayor of Central Hawke’s Bay.  

Performances by All Stars Performing Arts Group, Gina Dingle, Ascend Choir, Napier Pipe Band and St John’s Church Choir were a hit with many gathering to sing along or even dance on the street. 

"The energy of the performers, staff and contractors was infectious. Everyone went above and beyond to allow our community an opportunity to celebrate Christmas in style.” Says Monique Davidson, Central Hawke’s Bay Council Chief Executive.  

A highlight for many at the event was the arrival of Santa on a vintage Firetruck. Large crowds followed his entrance to Santa’s Grotto for their chance to tell him their Christmas wish-list and get a special photo. Waiting guests were able to keep busy by participating in various activities including the sponge toss and chalk art on the street.

Leading up to the event, many Christmas Window Display’s popped up all around town, with public voting taking place via the Central Hawke’s Bay Council’s Facebook page. The first-place prize of $200 was awarded to Osaka Sushi House, Waipukurau for their outstanding decorations, with Story’s Clothing, Waipukurau claiming the second-place prize of $150 for their Christmas window display.

During the event, attendees also had the chance to win with Council’s Christmas Costume Competition. There were many amazing costumes to choose from, with Mayor Alex Walker awarding the local Scooter mob first place in the Group Category, winning the $250 prize, and Central Hawke’s Bay local Abby O’Kane with the $100 Individual prize.
