Central Hawke's Bay Council Invites Govt To Be A Part Of The Housing Solution

“For three years we have been pushing for attention to the growing housing crisis in Central Hawke’s Bay, which is proportionally just as dire as the rest of the region. Our challenge is simply being recognised as a community that has a real housing need against the backdrop of the rest of the region.”

As part of Project Thrive, Central Hawke’s Bay Council’s ten-year housing strategy aims to support the community to access a home by: increasing social housing leadership; working together to improve housing overall; providing access to suitable housing; and ensuring retirement housing is provided in the most efficient and effective way.

Central Hawke’s Bay Councillor Kelly Annand says, “We all acknowledge that the current housing situation is a long-term systemic problem and that a solution won’t be an overnight fix”.

“We have actively connected government agencies with community housing providers and groups, and identified properties for purchase and new builds, but still too many families are faced with homelessness in our district.

“We know our community, we know its needs and we are working on a mixed model of solutions. We invite central government to partner with us to implement this model for short, medium and long solutions.
