The Central Hawke’s Bay District Council yesterday awarded a new contract for the delivery of its Solid Waste Services to Smart Environmental Limited.
The new contractor, responsible for kerbside collection of rubbish and recycling, along with the operation of the Districts Transfer Stations, is a further enhancement to support the surge of positivity, growth and development that Central Hawke’s Bay is experiencing.
Smart Environmental Limited is a recognised leader in the New Zealand Recycling Industry, with over 400 staff delivering waste and recycling services throughout New Zealand, with strong business values of partnership, trust and performance.
The awarding of the contract comes after a competitive, comprehensive and robust process to find a contractor for a term of up to 11 years. It is the second of two major procurements completed by the Central Hawke’s Bay District Council, following the awarding of a new Contract for its Three Waters and Open Spaces Maintenance Services in July. Council unanimously approved a report to award Smart Environmental the Contract at an extraordinary Council meeting held on 27 September 2018.
“This new contract represents a further strategic partnership that will be a cornerstone in supporting the continuing transformation and lift in the overall performance of Central Hawke’s Bay District Council”, says Chief Executive Monique Davidson. “We have high expectations and are positive about the innovative contributions Smart Environmental Limited will make to the Central Hawke’s Bay Community”.
The changes to this contract further support’s Councils commitment to the principles of Project THRIVE. The new strategic partnership provides an opportunity for Council and the Community to reconsider its environmental responsibilities and ways of managing waste now and into the future, through projects and a further review of its Solid Waste Management and Minimisation Plan (SWMMP).
Smart Environmental Senior Manager Ben Day, was proud and honoured to be partnering with the Council. “We are incredibly excited to be here in Central Hawke’s Bay”, said Mr Day.
“As a Kiwi owned company, we really care about working with local communities and our client Councils to enhance recycling services and to improve environmental outcomes through a real focus on keeping refuse to landfill to an absolute minimum. We are really looking forward to supporting Central Hawke’s Bay to THRIVE and to play a part in the transformational change within the district”, said Mr Day.
Smart Environmental will begin services in Central Hawke’s Bay on 20 October 2018 - earlier than anticipated, with the incumbent contractor giving notice to Council that it will end its services on 19 October. While a short mobilisation period, Council is working closely with Smart Environmental to limit any impacts to residents.
The Contract for the management of the Central Hawke’s Bay District Council’s landfill remains in a period of probity, and an announcement is expected on this procurement in the near future.
