We’re thrilled to announce that Han’s Healthy Fitness has been awarded the 2024 Youth-Friendly Employer Award by Jobs in Central Hawke’s Bay and Waipukurau Rotary for its exceptional commitment to supporting and empowering young employees.
What Makes Han’s Healthy Fitness a Standout Youth Employer?
Led by Hannah McLeod, Han’s Healthy Fitness has built a workplace where young employees are given opportunities to grow and thrive. The business priortises flexibility, mentorship, and understanding—a formula that has contributed to its success since it was founded in 2021, now serving over 400 local members.
“They have energy and are eager to learn,” says Hannah about her young team members. “While they are new to the industry, they are hungry for knowledge, and you can train them around your business.”
A key to Hannah’s success has been flexibility. She understands the importance of work-life balance, especially for young employees juggling other responsibilities like parenting and rural lifestyle requirements such as helping on the farm. This adaptability ensures her team members can succeed both professionally and personally.
Hannah McLeod: A Mentor and Role Model
Hannah doesn’t manage her team in a traditional fitness industry way, which is often based off commission only. Grace Chambers, who nominated Han’s Healthy Fitness, shares: “Working for Hannah has really changed my perspective on personal training. I never wanted to be a PT when I finished study, but since being connected with Hannah I really enjoy this industry and my job.”
Hannah’s business philosophy is rooted in building meaningful relationships. “The key to growing a business is to treat clients like more than just a number,” she explains. Being part of a small community allows staff to know clients personally, creating a strong and supportive environment.
A Business That Benefits the Community
Han’s Healthy Fitness offers unique benefits, including a women’s-only area and a kids’ zone, allowing parents to focus on their workouts. Its 24-hour access ensures clients have the flexibility they need to prioritize their health.
Hannah’s impact isn’t limited to her clients. Mayor Alex Walker praised her, saying: “It’s people like Hannah that are helping youth employees thrive in our community. It’s fantastic to see not only a new business but also a small business win this year’s award. It shows what you can achieve as a start-up business in Central Hawke’s Bay.”
Rotary’s Pat Portas adds: “Having businesses like yours bringing people into town is helping our local community. Being part of the selection process for the Youth-Friendly Employer award has been eye-opening, showcasing how businesses like Han’s Healthy Fitness are supporting youth.”
Could Your Business Be Next?
Han’s Healthy Fitness is a shining example of how investing in young people benefits everyone. As Hannah advises: “Be flexible around your employees’ needs.”
By taking a youth-friendly approach, your business could follow in Han’s Healthy Fitness’ footsteps.
Congratulations to Hannah and her team for setting the gold standard in youth employment this year!
