The Waipawa Pool Redevelopment was a key project consulted on in Central Hawke’s Bay District Councils 2018-2028 Long Term Plan. Council committed $650,000 in the first year of its Long Term Plan to the two-stage project, with the first stage of the project seeing a new 25 metre pool and recreation/learn to swim pool being installed, with accessible ramps into both pools and new treatment and filtration by 1 December 2018. A master plan for the site will also be developed with the community over the summer season. The second stage will include options for waterplay and look to enhance the surrounding Madge Hunter Park as part of the overall project.

Bruce Stephenson, Chair of the Waipawa Pool Project Reference Group was excited about the opportunities that would result from the project. “The Waipawa Pool has a special place in many people’s hearts. It’s a place so many Central Hawke’s Bay District families have shared many fun times together over the years at”, said Mr Stephenson. “As a project group, we are looking forward to the Central Hawke’s Bay Community getting behind the project and supporting us not only in fundraising, but in creating a future vision for the pool beyond its opening on 1 December”.

While the community fundraising seemed like a large amount, Mr Stephenson was confident the Project Group, with support from the Community would be successful. “Our District has a proud history of successfully fundraising and delivering projects for and on behalf of our community and this project should be no exception”, said Mr Stephenson. “We already have positive news from a major funder that we look forward to sharing together with the community in the near future”.
Signage on site will be installed in the coming weeks also to update the community on works proposed for Stage 1 and opportunities to support fundraising efforts.

While the Project Reference Group already have planning for a number of fundraising ideas underway, local fundraising ideas, financial contributions or those able to volunteer time towards helping support fundraising events was always needed. Any individuals looking to make financial contributions or support the fundraising efforts can contact the Projects Funding Co-Ordinator Pip Burne by email pip.burne@gmail.com or follow the project on the Waipawa and District Centennial Memorial Pool facebook page.
