Right to Demand A Poll on Electoral Systems

Notice is given under Section 28 (1) of the Local Electoral Act 2001, that electors of the Central Hawke’s Bay District Council have the right to demand a poll on the electoral system to be used at the next two triennial general elections (2019 and 2022) of the Central Hawke’s Bay District Council.

The choice is between the First Past the Post (FPP) and the Single Transferable Vote (STV) electoral systems.  Unless a poll determines otherwise, the FPP electoral system will continue to be used for the Central Hawke’s Bay District Council.

A valid demand must be:

  • Made in writing;
  • Signed by at least 5% of the number of eligible electors of the Central Hawke’s Bay District Council. This will require a minimum of 476 elector signatures;
  • Delivered to the office of the Central Hawke’s Bay District Council, 32 Ruataniwha Street, Waipawa by 28 February 2018.

Every elector who signs a demand must also set out in it his or her full name and the address for which he or she is qualified as an elector of the Central Hawke’s Bay District Council.

For further information, please contact Donna Moorcock, Deputy Electoral Officer, phone 06 857 8060 or email electoral.officer@chbdc.govt.nz
